Meadville, PA — January 16, 2017 — Ernst Conservation Seeds recently hired Kevin Jamison to fill the new position of crop inputs manager.

Jamison graduated from Pennsylvania State University in December of 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in plant sciences, agroecology option and a minor in environmental soil science. While at Penn State, Jamison served most recently as a field operations technician at the Penn State Horticultural Research Farm; served an earlier internship in the Weed Science Department of the College of Agricultural Sciences; and was a beekeeper and field technician in the Entomology Department. As a member of the Penn State Weed Team, Kevin and his teammates took third place in the Northeast Division during the 2015 Weed Olympics at Ohio State University.

As crop inputs manager, Jamison’s role is to develop and execute crop input plans to optimize the production return on investment while minimizing environmental impacts. Specific responsibilities included determining the health status of plants and identifying any needs with regard to nutrient management; weed control, insect control or plant disease control; developing protocols for optimizing crop yields, crop quality and soil health; overseeing and performing soil and plant material sampling for lab analysis; scouting production fields to evaluate plant and soil health; observing crops for pest and disease damage and devising solutions; meeting with other managers to discuss best practices for optimizing land use and crop rotations and cover crops; consulting with other managers on fertilizers and pesticides to purchase and apply; continually researching new crop input options and the improvement of current inputs; involvement in all aspects of crop production; and consulting with customers on weed management issues.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me,” said Jamison. “It couldn’t be a better fit with my degree and my training. And to join such a well-respected and cutting edge company as Ernst Seeds within weeks of graduating from college is just phenomenal. I can’t wait to get into the thick of things.”
